Bucharest streets, metro stations and underground passages flooded after heavy rain showers

27 May 2012

Romanian capital Bucharest was partially blocked over the week-end, after a couple of heavy rain showers on Friday evening (May 25 ) flooded streets and made traffic difficult in different areas of Bucharest. Several metro stations downtown Bucharest, including the Romana Square metro, were flooded, while in some areas, trams and trolley buses stopped working. Water on Soseaua Colentina boulevard was half a meter deep, making it impossible to walk or drive in the area.

The Universitate underground passage downtown Bucharest was also flooded and tens of epoople had to wait up to an hour to enter the metro station Universitate. The Nord Railway station platforms were also flooded, the same as the Unirii underground passage. This came after several days of rain in Bucharest, which put to the test the drainage system in the capital city.

Meteorologists warn it will continue to rain over the week-end and in the coming week starting May 28.
