Bucharest's Dambovita river channel to be improved with EUR 350 mln EU funding

27 July 2012

The channel of the Dambovita river, which crosses Romanian capital Bucharest, will be consolidated with the aid of EUR 350 million funding from the European Union. Bucharest City Hall has signed an agreement with the Environment Ministry and Romanian Waters for this project, which will finance improvements to the bed and collection channels for the river Dambovita.

"Imagine Dambovita river is exactly like an open channel where natural drainage no longer happens. This project will solve the drainage of wash in this river,” said Environment Minister Rovana Plumb.

As a result, whenever heavy rainfall occurs in Bucharest, the Dambovita river collection channel will work at full capacity.

Money for this project will come in two tranches, of EUR 258 million and EUR 95 million.
