Romania’s trade deficit narrowed to EUR 8.64 billion in the first eleven months, from EUR 8.96 billion in the same period a year earlier, the National Statistics Institute said Monday. Exports rose 27.2 percent on the year to EUR 34 billion, while imports were up 19.5 percent to EUR 42.6 billion.

Low cost airline Wizz Air carried 2.1 million passengers to and from Romania last year, up 33 percent compared to the previous year, according to the company. Wizz Air, with 42 permanent routes serving Romania, has also announced new ones: Bucharest – Bari, Bucharest – Alicante, Bucharest – Eindhoven and Cluj – Larnaca.

The International Monetary Fund will make available for Romania EUR 3.6 billion in a new, precautionary deal that will be signed after the current stand-by agreement expires in April, according to Mediafax newswire, quoting people close to the talks.

Online payments using bank cards increased by 38 percent in 2010, to EUR127.8 million and the number of transactions rose by 82 percent, to 2.26 million, according to data released by Romanian credit card transaction processor Romcard. In 2009, electronic commerce payments saw an increase of 75 percent, to EUR 92.8 million.
