Canada prepares to liberalize visas for Romania

07 July 2016

Canadian Minister of Immigration John McCallum will come to Brussels on Sunday to resolve the old dispute on visa liberalization for Romanian and Bulgarian citizens, before the European Commission’s reunion next week.

The signing of the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) was set for October, reports Cbc.ca. However, Canada risks a veto vote from Romania and Bulgaria, unhappy that their citizens are treated as second hand citizens and not allowed to get to Canada without visas like the rest of the EU citizens.

Canada and the US received three additional months to conform to the EU reciprocity policy on visa liberalization. Canada demands tourist visas from Romanians and Bulgarians whereas the US asks for visa from five member states of the European Union.

The European Commission will meet next week to decide whereas to impose visas to Americans and Canadians.
