Chevron finances 57 bikes for children in village where it will build an exploration well

17 April 2014

Oil and gas company Chevron, which started exploration work for shale gas in the NE part of Romania, in Vaslui county, after local protests, recently financed the donation of 57 bikes for children from the village of Puiesti, where the company received a construction permit for its well.

The donation was made via the local organization Procons, and is meant to help local children get to school easier, part of a program called 'Access to education'. The school management in the village was also involved in the project.

Earlier this month, Chevron got the green light to build a well to explore for shale gas at Puiesti, outside the village, after receiving the environment agreement prior to this. Chevron took two hectares of land under concession, and the well will be built 1.4 kilometers to the nearest village, and 300 meters to a river.

Chevron also received its first construction permit for the well at Siliştea – Pungeşti, the place where it faced the harshest opposition, both from villagers, and from environmental activists, back in the fall of 2013.
