Chinese specialists start assessment for high speed rail in Romania

25 March 2014

Chinese specialists will start technical analysis for a high speed train track in Romania, connecting Bucharest to the seaside city of Constanta, and modernizing the railway ring around Bucharest.

Romania and China recently signed an agreement to start feasibility study for a high speed railway track. Local authorities want to have the track done from zero, rather than upgrading the existing one, which was already partially modernized with EU funds. Another condition is to allow Romanian firms to take part in these projects.

Romania's vice-prime minister Liviu Dragnea and his Chinese counterpart Zhang Gaoli met in Beijing this week and signed the agreement. Dragnea has been on an official visit to China between March 20 and 26.
