Romania's Constitutional Court notifies Venice Commission on recent “virulent attacks”
Romania’s Constitutional Court announced it would notify the Venice Commission and the Council of Europe’s General Secretary about the recent “virulent attacks” that followed the court’s decision on the dismissal of the chief anticorruption prosecutor.
The letter will speak about the attacks of some public officials and political parties in Romania, who have been trying to discredit the institution and its authority and have been trying to cast doubt on the mandatory nature of its decisions, local News.ro reported.
The Constitutional Court complains that the population and president have been urged not to respect the court’s recent decision related to revoking the chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).
The court ruled at the end of May that President Klaus Iohannis should dismiss DNA chief Laura Codruta Kovesi, a symbol of the fight against corruption in Romania, as requested by justice minister Tudorel Toader in February. President Iohannis announced on Tuesday, June 5, that he would make a decision after he reads the court’s motivation.
The Constitutional Court’s president Valer Dorneanu issued a press release on Tuesday saying that the court’s decisions must be fully respected by all public authorities, public institutions, citizens and society.
