Construction of new Romanian privately owned hydroelectric plant at Izvorul Muntelui approved

07 November 2012

The National Electricity Grid company Transelectrica has approved the construction of a 300 MW hydroelectric power plant at Izvorul Muntelui, county Neamt, by the Bucharest-based company Water Energy Systems.

There is already another hydroelectric plant at Izvorul Muntelui, the 210 MW Bicaz-Stejaru plant, owned by the state company Hidroelectrica, which is currently embroiled in insolvency proceedings. Water Energy Systems Company is owned by an individual, Maria Soreanu.

Transelectrica was established as a result of the separation of the former National Electricity Company (CONEL) into four independent entities: Transelectrica, Electrica, Hidroelectrica and Termoelectrica - for transporting and dispatching, distribution and electricity production.
