Corruption and other human rights issues in Romania
Institutional corruption remains a major problem in Romania, which affects all levels of society, according to the US State Department report on human rights for 2014.
Other major human rights issues in Romania include the Police’s maltreatment, the harassment of prisoners and Roma people, including the death of at least one person because of police violence. The systemic discrimination against Roma people affects their access to appropriate educational, housing, health services and employment opportunities, according to the report.
The State Department report also points to the bad conditions in Romania’s prisons or the politicians’ attempts to compromise the independence of the justice.
Government institutions failed to take the necessary measures to restitute the Greek-Catholic churches confiscated by the former communist regime, the report reads.
