Defeat to Hungary ends Romania's European Handball Championship hopes

12 December 2012

Romania will not progress beyond the group stage in the European Women's Handball Championship after losing to Hungary. Romania went down 19 to 25 against Hungary, killing all hopes of qualification for the semi-finals of the competition hosted by Serbia. There is one more group stage match, but Romania will be playing for pride alone when they face Germany tomorrow evening (December 13 ).

After the match in Novi Sad, Serbia, Romania's coach Gheorghe Tadici described the game as one of the team's worst performances at the competition. “We offered many opportunities to our opponent to score goals and we had too many one-to-one missed shots,” he said. Adriana Nechita was named as Romania's player of the match, while for Hungary Anita Görbicz received the honor.

With one more round of group stage matches to play, three of the four semi-finalists have already been decided. Hungary and Montenegro will progress from Romania's group, while in Group 1, Norway are guaranteed a semi-final spot. The last semi-final place will depend on the results of the final Group 1 matches, with Serbia, Denmark and France all in with a chance.
