Deloitte CE Top 500: Romania ranks 5th in the region by number of companies

05 September 2013

Romania has a total of 35 companies in this year’s edition of Deloitte Central Europe Top 500 and ranks fifth in the region.

The combined revenues of Romania's largest companies amounted to almost EUR 39 billion at the end of 2012, slightly down from EUR 36.9 billion the year before.

Poland was first in the rankings, with 166 companies, followed by the Czech Republic with 87 companies, and Hungary which has 62 companies.

Ahmed Hassan, Deloitte Romania managing partner, said many local companies performed strongly in 2012.

‟We have 14 companies which advanced in this year’s edition of the top, including two of them that jumped 74 and 70 places, respectively,” Hassan said.

"There are also 5 new entries, compared to 4 in 2012, operating in various industries. Hence, many of our companies did perform strongly last year, although the business environment remains uncertain and full of challenges."

The rankings of Romania’s largest companies are dominated by the energy and resources industry, with 14 companies in the top, followed by consumer business and transportation, with 10 companies, manufacturing with six, technology, media and communication with four and life sciences and healthcare, which have just one company in the top.

The companies in Romania best positioned in the CEE Top 500 are Petrom (18th), Rompetrol Rafinare (43rd), Automobile Dacia (45th), Petrotel Lukoil (111th) place and BAT Romania Trading (118th).

Deloitte’s report also presents for the first time the composition of the management and supervisory boards of CE businesses.

In Romania, women and foreigners represent 17.1 percent and 35.5 percent, respectively, of the total number of management board members, higher than the 12.2 percent and 23.8 percent ratios registered among CE Top 500 countries.

In two separate rankings of the largest 50 banks and insurance firms, Romania is represented by six banks - BCR, BRD, Banca Transilvania, UniCredit Romania, CEC Bank and Raiffeisen Bank Romania, one more than in 2012, and four insurance companies, down from five companies last year.

Deloitte Central Europe Top 500 is carried out in 18 countries every year and ranks companies by revenues from sales reported for the previous year.
