Despite high hopes, Romania's Beyond the Hills fails to land Oscar nomination
Romanian film Beyond the hills/Dupa dealuri, directed by Cristian Mungiu, did not make it into the list of Oscar nominations, as many commentators had hoped for. The film could have been nominated for Best foreign film, where it was shortlisted, but instead the movies Amour, War Witch, No, A Royal Affair and Kon-Tiki were nominated instead.
The list of nominations includes Amour, Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook, Beasts of the Southern Wild and Argo for Best Movie.
Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix were nominated for the Best Actor Award, while Naomi Watts, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis were nominated for Best Female leading Role. Romanian film Beyond the hills/Dupa dealuri picked up the Golden Astor for Best Film at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina, which screened over 300 films. The film enjoyed more success at the Cannes film festival, with the award for best actress awarded to Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur. Beyond the Hills was the opening film of the Romanian Film Festival in London. It was screened in front of a full house on the evening of 22 November 2012, and was followed by a Q&A with actresses Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur. More about the film here.
