Supporters of equal rights for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community will take part in Bucharest's Annual Diversity March on Saturday (June 8) at 17:00. The march begins at the Arcul de Triunf and continues down Soseaua Kiseleff to Piaţa Victoriei.

“The march celebrates the progress that has been achieved in advancing LGBT rights and demonstrates the commitment to ensuring their fulfillment in Romania and worldwide,” said the US Embassy Bucharest's Chargé d'Affaires Duane C. Butcher, who will also be joining the march on Saturday.

The Chargé d'Affaires referred to US President Obama's proclamation to make June Pride Month in the the US and commented on the progress that has been made in Romania on LGBT rights in recent years. “The new Diversity March route this year in central Bucharest shows how far Romania has come in moving its LGBT citizens out of the shadows and into the mainstream of society,” said Duane C Butcher.

The Chargé d'Affaires recounts some of the history of the LGBT rights movement, detailing its beginnings at the Stonewall Inn, New York, in 1969. He also reminded that in many places in the world, people still face discrimination and even injury and death due to their sexual orientation.

“The Diversity March is an opportunity for us to stand up for the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons worldwide and to contribute to greater understanding and acceptance of the differences that make each of us unique as individuals,” said Duane C Butcher.
