Drought destroys Romania’s harvests
Romania’s wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflower harvests will be much lower this year compared to those in 2014 because of the drought, according to farmers.
The worst situation is in eastern Romania, in the Vaslui, Bacau and Botosani counties, said Laurentiu Baciu, president of the League of Associations of Agricultural Producers in Romania (LAPAR).
In the most affected counties, the corn crops are ruined almost completely, whereas more than half of the sunflower crops will be lost. The wheat harvest will be half compared to last year.
Authorities should give farmers a state aid of EUR 1 billion because of the drought, said Baciu, quoted by Agerpres.
