Earth Hour 2016: Romania turns off the lights for one hour this March
Romania will once again join the Earth Hour movement in 2016, for the eighth consecutive year. Thus, on March 19, the individuals, cultural organizations, public institutions, and companies in Romania will switch off the electricity between 20:30 and 21:30, local time.
More than 7,000 cities from over 160 countries will take part in this global movement this year.
Over 40 cities in Romania joined the Earth Hour in the previous editions and hundreds of thousands of Romanians switched off their lights on the last Saturday of March. Moreover, the Palace of the Parliament, the largest civil building in the world, also stayed in the dark for one hour during the Earth Hour movement.
This year, the event in Romania will be organized under the message Give nature some of your energy. In this hour, the Romanians are invited to turn off the lights and go outside for a walk in the park, a short run, or a bike ride, according to WWF Romania.
The movement started in Australia in 2007, when over 2.2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour. In 2012, over 6,900 cities in 152 countries around the world joined Earth Hour and turned off the lights. Romania joined the movement in 2009.
