Romania could introduce electronic monitoring to reduce prison overcrowding

03 August 2017

Romania’s Justice Ministry considers introducing electronic monitoring for convicts to reduce overcrowding in prisons, said justice minister Tudorel Toader yesterday, quoted by Mediafax.

He explained that Romania could take over a series of measures implemented by the Georgian authorities in 2012. Tudorel said that he will have talks with prison union leaders on August 8.

Romanian authorities also consider building two new prisons, modernizing the current ones, and turning former military units into prisons, the justice minister added.

In April, the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) said that Romanian prisons don’t comply with the European Convention on Human Rights. It called on the Romanian state to provide a precise timetable for the implementation of appropriate measures within six months.
