The EU summit that will be organized in Sibiu in 2019 is to bring 27 heads of state and government from European countries, 36 official delegations, 400 high-level guests and about 800 journalists to Romania, local Mediafax reported.
Sibiu will host on May 9, Europe Day, the first EU summit to be organized after Brexit, and the city is already getting ready for the big event.
Representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Interpretation have already visited the summit’s locations in the City Hall and central squares. Moreover, the Foreign Ministry has named a special designer for the event, who is in charge of making sure that all the spaces are arranged according to the protocol. The authorities involved in the organization meet at least once a month to discuss issues related to the event, according to Mediafax.
In mid-September last year, EC president Jean-Claude Juncker proposed the organization of a special EU summit on March 30, 2019, one day after the triggering of the Brexit Article 50, in the Romanian city of Sibiu. Romanian president Klaus Iohannis said a month later that the informal meeting of EU leaders will be organized on Europe Day – May 9, 2019.
Romania will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first part of 2019.
