Euronet doubles chain of ATMs in Romania via purchase from local lender Banca Carpatica
Electronic payment services provider Euronet Services recently doubled its ATM chain in Romania after buying 200 ATMs from local lender Banca Carpatica, according to the bank.
The bank also signed an agreement to take part in Euronet's shared ATMs network and a contract for POS acquiring and card issuance services. The value of the deal was not revealed.
Euronet is currently the sole operator of a shared ATM network in Romania, with five banks taking part in the program, across the 41 Romanian counties.
The former Carpatica ATMs located inside the bank's units will be co-branded Euronet and Carpatica, while those at different locations will only be marked with the Euronet sign.
Via the deal, Banca Carpatica says it managed to double the volume of its network, as it provides access to a wider network of ATMs, without any additional costs, said Johan Gabriels, CEO of Banca Comerciala Carpatica.
In 2013, Euronet Worldwide processed approximately USD 62 billion in ATM, prepaid and money transfer payments for approximately 200 financial institutions, 200 mobile operators, 510,000 retailer and agent locations, and millions of individual consumers worldwide. The company has been active in Romania in the last 10 years, with a chain of ATMs, as well as with Epay, the electronic recharge processor.
