European Commission allots EUR 226 mln for Romanian railway line

18 October 2016

The European Commission has recently approved the allocation of EUR 226.6 million from the Cohesion Fund for the rehabilitation of the railway line Bucharest-Constanta, according to a press release of the EC.

The project is part of the 2007-2013 Transport Operational Programme.

The rehabilitation work was initially financed by the Romanian state and the EC decided to grant this non-reimbursable financing retroactively. The total value of the project amounts to almost EUR 475 million, according to the document.

The EC is now taking over a part of the initial expenditure the Romanian state made for rehabilitating the railway line, said Corina Cretu, the European Commissioner for Regional Policy.

The project’s main aim is to reduce the journey time between the two cities.
