European Commission starts infringement against Romania
The European Commission launched on April 29 the infringement procedure against Romania, Austria, Croatia, Ireland and Latvia, because they haven’t fully mirrored the Directive on Energy Efficiency.
The member states need to save energy between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2020, according to the Directive. They need to introduce specific measures to improve energy efficiency in households, industry and transport.
EU countries needed to mirror the Directive into their local laws by June 5, 2014. If the five countries do not meet this legal obligation in two months, the European Commission could send them to the EU Court of Justice and request financial penalties.
