Eurostat: Agriculture’s share in the gross added value drops to 4.8% in Romania
The industry was the main economic activity in the European Union last year, including in Romania, according to a report of the EU’s statistical office Eurostat.
Romania ranked first in the EU for the decrease in the share of agriculture in the gross added value between 1995 and 2015. Agriculture only accounted for 4.8% of the gross added value in Romania in 2015, down from 19.2% in 1995.
However, Romania ranked first in the EU for the growth in the contribution of public administration, defense, education, and healthcare sectors to the gross added value, from 6.1% to 11.7% between 1995 and 2015.
The Eurostat report shows that the industry was the main employer only in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia whereas in Romania the agriculture sector was the main employer, providing 26.6% of the total jobs. Despite this, agriculture employed even more people in 1995, namely 42.4%.
