Eurostat: Romanians go the movies less frequently than other Europeans
Only 7.1% of Romanians aged over 16 went to the movies at least four times in 2015, according to data from the EU’s statistical office Eurostat.
This is slightly higher than the 6.2% reported in Greece or the 2.9% in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, but below the 29.3% in France or the 30.5% in Switzerland. High cinema attendance rates were also recorded in Luxembourg (26.4%), Belgium (22.7%) and Holland (21.9%). On average, 17.7% of the EU population went to the cinema at least four times a year in 2015.
There were 81 cinemas in Romania at the end of 2015, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS). These held almost 500,000 screenings, seen by 11 million viewers. The average number of viewers per screening was of 23. Also in 2015, 442 films were distributed, out of which 57 were local productions.
When it comes to attending sport events, only 6.3% of Romanians aged over 16 did so at least four times in 2015, according to the same Eurostat data. It is one of the lowest percentages in Europe, slightly lower than Bulgaria’s 6.9% and higher than Greece’s 4.9%.
Attending live performances, such as concerts, theater or ballet, was done by 6.7% of Romania’s population at least four times in 2015, while 6.3% of the locals visited cultural sites such as historical monuments, museums or art galleries.
