The number of building permits for residential properties issued in Romania decreased by 24.5% y/y to 14,122 in Romania during the first five months of the year, according to the statistics office INS.

The corresponding aggregated surface of the projects decreased by 20.5% y/y to 3.5mn square meters.

The number of permits for all other categories of buildings decreased this year compared to 2022, except for the category of hotels and similar buildings, where 17.7% more permits were issued (93 permits in January-May) and the corresponding surface of the projects more than doubled to 134,542 sqm.

The second-largest category of buildings, that of industrial and logistic buildings (”other buildings” according to INS methodology), contracted by 9.9% in terms of the surface of the projects for which permits were issued to 1.17mn sqm.

The number of permits for such projects remained constant compared to the same period last year (at 2,349 permits).
