Romanian MPs: Films in cinemas to have subtitles in the language of any national minority
Movies in cinemas must also be subtitled or dubbed in the language of the national minorities in Romania, when translated or dubbed in Romanian, according to an amendment proposed by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and adopted by the Chamber of Deputies’ Culture Committee.
The proposal was included in the draft law on the adoption of Emergency Ordinance no. 67/2017, which amends the Cinematography Law, reports local News.ro.
The UDMR parliamentary group motivated its proposal by saying that "in an area where a regional or minority language is used by its inhabitants, it would be necessary and useful to view films in the language of the national minority for the development and preservation of their ethnic and cultural identities.”
