First Romanian elected in Bundestag wants to voice Romanians' problems in Germany
German Bundestag member Bernd Fabritius, born in Romania's central city of Sibiu, aims to improve his native country's image via his new position, become a voice for Romanians in Germany and represent ethnic Germans in Romania – the Sasi.
Having left Romania in 1985 together with his parents after waiting for the communist's state approval for around 16 years, Fabritius, now 48, has kept his Romanian citizenship.
The new Bundestag member run in the elections in Munich, on the ticket of the Christian-Social Union.
Around 25,000 Sasi from Transylvania and 25,000 Romanians live in the Munich area of Germany.
Fabritius often returns to Romania, either to visit friends and the remaining family here, or to teach at two universities in Sibiu, where he is an associate professor, according to Mediafax newswire.
