09 May 2017

Romania’s former President Traian Basescu was heard yesterday at the General Prosecutors’ Office in a retrocession case that took place in 2003 when Basescu was Bucharest mayor.

The case involved the retrocession of several houses in the center of Bucharest.

After an hour-long hearing, Basescu didn’t want to make any comments on the case. Asked if he knew the US citizen Nicholas Jordan, who was retroceded 66 houses in Bucharest in 2003, Basescu said that he didn’t know him.

The former President’s lawyer said there was no criminal case against his client, because he had not broken the law. “We are not nervous, in any sense,” the lawyer said, reports local Wall-street.ro.

According to legal sources, Basescu was heard as witness in a case related to the retrocession of 66 houses in Bucharest in 2003. The houses are located on the Serban Voda street in the capital and were given to a US-Romanian citizen, who claimed that he was the owner’s heir.

Basescu was Bucharest mayor between 2000 and 2004.
