Four bison released in Romania’s Vanatori-Neamt Natural Park

08 March 2017

Four bison, namely two male and two female, will be released in the Vanatori-Neamt Natural Park in Romania in the coming days, according to a statement from Romanian state–owned forestry company Romsilva, which manages the park.

The bison, which are aged between two and eight, were moved to a special place for accommodation. In the next days, Romsilva specialists will release them in the Natural Park.

Following this action, a total of 29 bison will roam free in the Vanatori-Neamt Natural Park. The first five animals were released five years ago. They are monitored by Romsilva specialists.

Romsilva manages three important groups of bison, in Bucsani (Dambovita county), Hateg (Hunedoara county), and Vanatori-Neamt Natural Park. In total, the state-owned company monitors 96 bison.

The bison disappeared from the Romanian fauna three centuries ago, being reintroduced in 1958 when a pair of bison was brought from Poland to Hateg Forest Park. Other animals were then imported from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Russia, according to Romsilva.
