Fund manager: Urgent need for investments at Bucharest airport

08 March 2017

Romanian investment fund Fondul Proprietatea, a minority shareholder in the state-owned company that operates Bucharest’s Henri Coanda Airport, has been asking for investments in the airport’s terminals because the traffic increased almost by a fifth last year.

“The airport is growing really, really fast,” said Greg Konieczny, vice president of Franklin Templeton Investment Management, the company that manages Fondul Proprietatea, reports local Profit.ro.

In 2016, almost 11 million passengers passed through the Henri Coanda Airport, up 18% over the previous year.

Konieczny explained that when investments are needed and correspond to a demand, Fondul Proprietatea doesn’t stand against. In the last six years, the companies that are part of the fund’s portfolio carried out capital expenditure of EUR 4.2 billion.

The investment proposal for the Bucharest airport is very significant given that Fondul Proprietatea opposed, for example, the construction of the reactors 3 and 4 within the Cernavoda plant.

“The overinvestment is obvious in the nuclear field. It is crazy to continue,” Konieczny said.
