General director of Romania's Air Traffic Administration resigns

31 August 2015

Ion-Aurel Stanciu, the general director of Romania's Air Traffic Services Administration – ROMATSA, resigned on Friday last week, after the Romanian air flight controllers announced they would go on general strike.

The Transport Minister Iulian Matache asked the unions to abandon the general strike scheduled for September 1, saying that the protest was useless and affected the citizen’s comfort. He also requested the unions to continue the negotiations for the collective labor contract, reports local Mediafax.

The air flight controllers announced they would go on a general strike starting September 1, if their 14 claims were not solved. They said their problems involved “life and death” issues that were also related to the passengers’ safety.

The union leaders from ROMATSA met last week with the Transport Minister Iulian Matache, but the discussions had no result. The unions have demanded the “demilitarization” and “depoliticizing” of ROMATSA. They accused the ROMATSA director Aurel Stanciu of not having respected what the unions have agreed with the Transport Ministry last month.
