German firm that built National Arena is latest to start Romanian wind farm project

21 January 2013

German engineering and construction firm Max Bögl is to invest EUR 180 – 200 million in a wind farm in the Tulcea area, according to Romanian business news service Ziarul Financiar. The company has already been involved in construction projects in Romania, including the National Arena, Bucharest, and the Constanţa highway.

The new wind farm will have 99 MW installed capacity. Construction will begin this year and finish in 2014, according to the company. “There are three reasons to get involved in such a project in Romania: we are present on the local market and have good experience, there are very good wind energy conditions in Dobrogea and, finally, the green energy subsidy scheme is advantageous compared with other countries,” said the CEO of Max Bögl Romania Romeo Botocan, quoted by Ziarul Financiar.

With heights between 90 and 110 meters, the wind turbines will be the tallest in Romania, according to Ziarul Financiar. Wind farms are popping up frequently in Romania as more and more companies are attracted by the green certificates scheme in the country. Total installed capacity has been doubling yearly since 2010.

The company's turnover in Romania last year was around EUR 110 million, which was slightly down on 2011. Budgeted turnover for 2013 is EUR 80 – 100 million, again according to Ziarul Financiar.

Founded by Max Bögl in 1929, the Max Bögl Group, headquartered in Neumarkt, Germany, has annual sales of EUR 1.6 billion and around 6,000 employees. The company is among the top five biggest German building firms and is also Germany's largest privately owned construction company.
