Ice causes chain car crashes on newly opened highway segment in Romania
Over 31 cars were involved on Sunday (December 22) in a series of car crashes on the newly opened Sibiu – Orastie highway segment in central Romania. The crashes were caused by glaze and fog, and traffic was blocked for several hours.
The Highways Management Company CNADNR failed to sprinkle on time the anti-skid substance which would have prevented the crashes. The company received a RON 8,000 – or some EUR 1,770 fine – for not complying with its duties.
Four people were injured in the crashes, and one of them was badly injured, as she needed special intervention to be removed from the car. The other three injured people were taken to the hospital with fractures.
The highway segment was inaugurated three days prior to the car crashes.
