First gold medal for Romania at Baku 2015 European Games
Romanian athlete Ana Maria Branza won the first gold medal for Romania at the 2015 European Games in Baku. She defeated Russian Yana Zvereva 15-11 in the women's individual epee final on Tuesday, June 23.
"It has been a long day and I have had some great matches. This is historic for me because my name will be there as champion for years and years. It was tough, but it was my day today,” said the Romania, cited on the European Games’ website.
Romanian Simona Gherman also won bronze in women’s individual epee competition.
Romania’s Tiberiu Dolniceau got silver at Baku on June 23, after losing 15-10 to Ukraine’s Andriy Yagodka in the men's individual sabre final. Italians Alberto Pellegrini and Luigi Miracco ranked third in this competition.
