The ad-hoc anti-Government coalition organized by the Social Democrats in Romania is close to gathering the 233 votes needed to overthrow the Liberal Government by no-confidence motion, according to G4media.ro.

But the success of the motion is far from being guaranteed, despite the Social Democrats claiming that over 250MPs would support their move.

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) and Pro Romania are supporting the Social Democrats. But the ethnic Hungarians’ party UDMR declared that its MPs would not vote for the motion. The party does not want to further narrow the Government’s room of maneuver in mitigating the coronavirus pandemic, the head of UDMR senators, Cseke Attila, explained.

Separately, UDMR president Kelemen Hunor said that the opposition’s success in passing the motion would not change the situation too much: the Government can remain in office with reduced capacities, or another Liberal Government could be appointed.

"If there is such a discussion, UDMR will try to contribute to the consolidation of a center-right solution," Hunor stated.
