Government still silent after three days of protests in Romania

16 January 2012

After three days of street protests, Romanian authorities are yet to react publicly. While opposition National Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu held a press conference asking other disgruntled Romanians to protest peacefully, a representative of the governing coalition is yet to come forward. Prime Minister Emil Boc on Sunday visited a gendarme who was injured on Saturday evening in Bucharest, but made no comment.

The Romanian Government is set to meet for talks on a new draft for the healthcare law today ( January 16 ), after president Traian Basescu publicly asked the PM to withdraw the previous proposal, which sparked debate and eventually drove protesters out onto the streets.

Asked by journalists whether he would resign over these protests, the PM said the fate of this Government needs to be decided in the Parliament.

Opposition parties have already started to gather signatures for a Government motion of censure.
