Grammy winning soprano Sumi Jo performs in Bucharest Opera’s La Traviata

14 March 2017

Grammy award winning soprano Sumi Jo will perform the role of Violetta in the March 22 representation of La Traviata at the Bucharest Opera.

This is the first time the South Korean soprano, who made her stage debut playing Violetta in Toulon, performs in Romania.

With an international career spanning 30 years, Sumi Jo gave recitals at highly visible events, such as the 2010 World Football Cup, the Beijing Olympic Games, the Sochi Olympic Games, or the concert in the honor of Pope Francis on the occasion of his visit to South Korea in 2014.

She made her debut as Violetta in La Traviata in Toulon, a city in southern France and later performed a variety of roles. She has worked on some 50 recordings, including 10 solo albums. Among them is the Grammy winning album Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow), together with Sir Georg Solti, and Un Ballo in Maschera, conducted by Herbert von Karajan.

She recently appeared as herself in Paolo Sorentino’s 2015 drama Youth, where she performed the Simple Song #3. The song was nominated at the Golden Globes in the Best Original Song category and at the Academy Awards in 2016. The song, composed by David Land, won the Best Original Song award at the Italian David di Donatello awards.

The March 22 representation of La Traviata will be conducted by Marcello Mottadelli, the artistic coordinator of the Bucharest National Opera. Paul Curran directed the performance, Gary McCann designed the stage sets, Paul Hackenmueller was the lights designer, and Daniel Jinga the choir master. Tenor Valter Borin will perform as Alfredo Germont, and Stefan Ignat as Giorgio Germont.

The day after the Bucharest performance, Sumi Jo will deliver a master class for the young artists of the Bucharest Opera.

Online tickets for the event are currently sold out.
