Romanians in Britain seek funding for ’13 Shades of Romanian’ documentary

23 March 2015

Several Romanians living in London are raising funds for 13 Shades of Romanian, a documentary which aims to change the mentality towards Romanians in Britain by presenting the way they live, work and integrate into the British culture.

"Our image, as Romanian immigrants, has severely been altered in the last few years in the UK," the initiators of the project said. "The truth of the matter is that we’re being accused of many things on a regular basis, such as being responsible for a crime wave, asking for benefits, abusing the NHS free health care system or stealing British jobs. Instead of depicting an objective and comprehensive view of the reality, the media chose to fuel scandals and make examples of isolated cases that happen in the UK and anywhere in the world regardless of nationality."

Their aim is to try and change the perception towards Romanians and build a genuine and fresh view of Romanians in Britain, without insisting on preconceived stereotypes.

13 Shades of Romanian is a 45-minute documentary that will portray the stories of 13 Romanian people living in Britain. British travel journalist Richard Green will make the interviews and narrate the stories.

The documentary’s team is made of Dragos Teglas – documentary director and editor, Anda Teglas – director and producer, Ana Turcanu – story editor and Cristian Spiridon – line producer, and others.

The fund raising campaign started on March 1, on crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo, and will close on April 11. So far, the team managed to raise over GBP 8,000. It aims to raise a total of GPB 12,000.
