Groupon exits Romanian market after three years of heavy losses

04 September 2014

Groupon, one of the largest companies active on the market of online vouchers, has announced its clients that will stop to operate in Romania. The company registered losses of some EUR 2.5 million in 2011-2013, according to local B1.ro. The reason for its withdrawal from the Romanian market is the reduced rate of Internet use, which resulted in a lower than expected profitability.

“This decision wasn’t taken easily. But after a thorough analysis of the Romanian market we decided to stop operations in the country, starting from September 3,” Luke Massery, regional vice-president Groupon, said in a letter addressed to customers.

Holders of Groupon discount coupons valid in the next period can use them until the date written on the coupon, or ask for a refund.
