Half a million Romanians go on cultural spree during Night of Museums

20 May 2013

Around half a million people chose to spend last Saturday evening and night visiting 180 museums in Bucharest and across Romania during the latest edition of the Night of the Museums. In Bucharest, over 144,000 people, based on partial numbers, chose to visit one of more of the 32 museums open for the public, free of charge, on Saturday night.

Similarly to previous years, the most popular seems to have been the Natural History Museum Grigore Antipa, which welcomed over 18,600 guests, who chose to form a long queue on the sidewalk and get free entry to the museum. The event also offered a ticket discount for the Human Body exhibition. The museum was open between 18,00 and 04,00 in the morning. It welcomed over 8,000 people under 25, and over 10,000 above that age.

The National History Museum was also popular – 10.500 visitors from 16,00 to midnight, while the Geology Museum was visited by 14,600 people. The Bucharest Municipal Museum had 10,000 guests.

The National Art Museum welcomed a crowd of 8,500 visitors, while the Theodor Aman museum, which re-opened for the public on that evening, was visited by 4.500 people. The World Press Photo România exhibition was also popular, with 15,000 visitors.

Crowds varying from 4,000 to 7,000 also went to see the George Enescu Museum, the Romanian Peasant Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Firefighters' Museum – Foisorul de Foc, and the Bellu Museum, among others.

Elsewhere in the country, the higher number of visitors per museum was even higher: almost 20,000 went to see the Astra Museum complex in Sibiu, while in Cluj, the Art Museum got 15,000 visitors. In Iasi, 21,000 people went to see the Moldova National Museum complex.
