Hall of Fame inducts Romanian gymnast Gina Gogean

gymastics hall of fameRetired Romanian gymnast Gina Gogean is to enter the Gymnastics Hall of Fame, according to a recent announcement. Now aged 35, Gina Gogean reached the peak of her sport in the 90s, winning nine World Championship gold medals. She joins other greats of Romanian gymnastics in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame such as Nadia Comăneci, Simona Amânar, Ecaterina Szabo and Octavian Bellu.

“We're thrilled to honor these amazing gymnastics legends!” said the Gymnastics Hall of Fame representatives on the announcement of the 2013 inductees. Although enjoying more success at the World Championships, with 15 medals in total, Gogean also won Olympic medals – two silver and three bronze – and picked up five golds at the European Championships.

Since retiring, she has worked as a referee and coached at the Deva gymnastics center. To be considered for the Hall of Fame, gymnasts must win Olympic or World Championship medals and dedicate at least 10 years to the sport after retiring from competition.

Also inducted this year are Albert Azaryan of Armenia and two Russians, Ljubov Burda and Yuri Korolev.
