Heineken plans real estate compound on 142-year old Grivita beer factory site in Bucharest

15 September 2011

The former Grivita beer factory complex in Bucharest, near the recently – inaugurated Basarab flyover will be demolished and replaced with a compound made of 14 buildings, including offices and a hotel. The revamping process of the industrial area on Soseaua Orhideelor is currently waiting the public vote for the Zonal Urban Planning (PUZ), which also requires an approval from the Bucharest General Council.

The beer factory is owned by Heineken Romania, which already runs four beer factories ins the country. The compound should cover 27,200 sqm and would include 20-floored towers- see the submitted plan above for details. The project has been publicized for public debate on the Bucharest City Hall website. You can find more details (in Romanian) here.

The factory building itself is a historic monument and parts of it will be kept. In 2007, the Bucharest City Hall had to ask for its exclusion from the list of monuments in order to build the Basarab flyover.

The factory was built in 1869 by German industrialist Erhard Luther and was one of the first beer factories in Bucharest and in Romania. The Luther beer has become the supplier of the Royal House of Romania. After 1848, the factory was natinalized and became the Grivita beer factory. Its name was changed into Gambrinus in the 70s. Heineken Romania bought it in 2007.
