Highway in Romania shows first cracks, two weeks after inauguration
A ten-meter long crack appeared on the new highway section between Sibiu and Orastie, which was opened for traffic less than two weeks ago, reports local news site turnulsfatului.ro.
Several workers employed by Italian contractor Impregilo, which built this highway section, temporarily closed the traffic on the affected lane and took some probes. They then covered the crack, which was about 1 cm wide, with cement.
Some representatives of the construction company said that the cracks were just superficial, in the asphalt layer, and were not due to problems in the roadbed, according to turnulsfatului.ro.
The 22-kilometer highway section should have been ready one year ago, but the constructor had problems finishing it due to landslides, which affected the road’s structure. It was inaugurated on November 14, only two days before the presidential elections.
