Highway segment finished ahead of schedule, inaugurated without Romanian Govt. members present

24 October 2012

A first segment of the Timisoara – Lugoj highway in Romania, of some 9.5 kilometers, was recently opened for traffic, with work finished six months ahead of schedule. The segment connects Timisoara to Remetea Mare, allowing cars coming from Lugoj to bypass Timisoara. Unlike many other highway openings in Romania, this one was not attended by any Government representatives, but only by local highways company representatives and construction companies' employees. The consortium Spedition UMB- Tehnostrade - Carena SpA Impresa di Construzioni worked on the highway. In recent years, most highway segment inaugurations were attended by Prime Ministers and Transport Ministers.

“From what we know, this is the first highway segment finished before the contracted deadline. The highway segment is finished, with no speed restrictions, Next week, the Regional Roads and Highways Company will take over its administration, and in two weeks, after ending the maintenance bid, the service spaces will open,” said Ioan Ambruş, head of the Regional Roads and Highways Company Timisoara. Work on this segment started in October last year and the contract was worth some EUR 56 million, most of which came from EU funding.

A second segment of the same highway, of 26.5 kilometers, is being reviewed by the National Roads and Highways Company. The Timisoara – Lugoj highway is 35 kilometers long and will be part of the IV Pan – European corridor.
