Romanian capital, fourth cheapest tourist destination in the world
Affordable accommodation and taxis make Bucharest one of world’s cheapest tourist destinations, ranking 81st out of 84 cities surveyed by the British transfer services operator Hoppa for their 2017 report on the price of world holiday destinations.
Bucharest is listed with an average cost of GBP 43.87 (EUR 51.78). The cost covers the average price of hotel accommodation, food, drink, taxi and entertainment per person, per night.
Romania’s capital comes ahead only of Cartagena (Colombia) with a cost of GBP 39.70 (EUR 46.86), Cairo (Egypt) at GBP 39.09 (EUR 46.14) and the last ranked and the cheapest destination, Sofia (Bulgaria) at GBP 38.21 (EUR 45.10).
At the opposite end, the world’s most expensive tourist destination is Zurich, at GBP 170.43 (EUR 201.15). The Swiss city is followed by New York, at GBP 157.29 (EUR 185.64), Copenhagen at GBP 150.72 (EUR 177.89) and Oslo at GBP 147.36 (EUR 173.92). Budapest, in neighboring Hungary, ranks 62 among the 84 surveyed cities, at a cost of GBP 56.69 (EUR 66.91).
According to Hoppa, Bucharest is the third most affordable surveyed city on the cost of accommodation, with a price for a one-night stay for two people of GBP 42.69 (EUR 50.39). The Sunny Beach resort in Bulgaria is the most affordable at GBP 37.36 (EUR 44.09), while New York is the most expensive at GBP 183.73 (EUR 216.85).
When it comes to transport, Bucharest also offers good value to tourists. The average cost of a 3 km taxi ride in Romania’s capital is the eighth lowest among surveyed cities at GBP 1.59 (EUR 1.88). The report found the lowest taxi costs in Cairo at GBP 0.89 (EUR 1.05), and the most expensive in Zurich at GBP 16.20 (EUR 19.12).
