IBM ponders 3,000-people center in Romania, negotiates state aid

14 September 2011

US company IBM is currently negotiating with the Romanian state the details of a state aid scheme which could be a decisive move in IBM choosing Romania for a 3,000-people IT services center.

Discussions have been held between IBM and representatives of the Communications, Finance, Justice and Economy ministries in Romania. Other companies would benefit from a similar state aid, such as Oracle, Dell and Ericsson, according to Romania's Communication Minister Valerian Vreme. For IBM, the Communications Ministry has proposed university cities Cluj – Napoca, Iasi or Timisoara as possible places for setting up a new center.

IBM already has 1,500 employees in Romania. The company has two centers in Romania, both in Bucharest: Global Procurement Services Group Romania Remote Delivery Center and Application Services Global Delivery Center Eastern Europe. IBM Romania posted a turnover of EUR 53 million last year, according to data from the Finance Ministry.
