IMF memorandum open for changes after discussions with workers unions, president says

11 May 2010

The memorandum of understanding with the International Monetary Fund and the European Union could be renegotiated if the workers unions will propose changes, said Romanian president Traian Basescu. Basescu said he insisted on consulting the union workers before the memorandum will be approved by the Government. He also stated Romania needs to decide fast what measures it will take to reduce spending.

The document containing the reforms Romania will make this year will be debated in the Economic and Social Council this Friday morning, according to union leader Bogdan Hossu. If changes will be made to the memorandum, an IMF delegation should return for another round of negotiations.
