IMF: Romania hasn’t asked yet for a new agreement
Romania needs to ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to negotiate a new agreement, if it wants one. The IMF and the Government will then analyze the type of agreement that can be concluded, said Guillermo Tolosa, IMF representative for Romania and Bulgaria.
“We first need to receive a request and then we will discuss with the Government all the possible options,” said Tolosa, cited by local Agerpres.
He added that the IMF hasn’t yet received such a request.
Romania’s current agreement with the IMF, its third since 2009, ends next week. The IMF mission in Bucharest in October will not be an evaluation mission, but a technical one, that will look into Romania’s budget for 2016.
The country has two categories of debt to the IMF, namely a part that needs to be paid by the Government and a part that needs to be paid by the Central Bank. The Government has repaid its debt completely whereas BNR still has three installments to pay, said Tolosa.
At the beginning of September, Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici said that Romania planned to start the talks for a new agreement starting this year.
