The Independent recommends eight good value Romanian wines
Although Romania is the sixth-biggest wine producer in Europe, after world leaders Italy, France, Spain, Germany and Portugal (according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine), Romanian wines are not that popular in the UK.
In this context, in an article published by The Independent, wine columnist Terry Kirby recommended eight Romanian wines representing good value for money. For example, there is the Brindle Ridge Merlot, which costs only GBP 5.75 in Spar stores, or the Wildflower Pinot Grigio, which has the same price.
“Even more appealing than both is Burebista Feteasca Neagra Shiraz 2017 (GBP 9.99 laithwaites.co.uk) made in the mountainous region of Muntenia in the south east of the country and where shiraz gives a little spice and structure to the local feteasca neagra grape with excellent results: juicy, with spicy, herby, brambly with a touch of chocolate, flavours,” Kirby wrote.
His list also includes the Solevari Reserve Pinot Noir 2017 produced by Cramele Recas, the Kronus Pinot Noir made by Lorena Deaconu, and Prince Ştirbey Tamâioasa Româneasca Sec 2016, which comes “from a small winery in the foothills of the Transylvanian Alps, owned by a genuine Romanian princess.” There is also the Prince Ştirbey Novac Sec 2015 and the Sole Orange Wine, Recas Estate 2016.
