Romania’s two major parties dominate in European Elections poll

13 February 2019

Some 27.8% of Romanians who have made up their mind about voting in the elections for the European Parliament would back the senior ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) while the main opposition force, the National Liberal Party (PNL), follows closely, with 26.7% of the vote intentions, according to an INSCOP poll commissioned by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

The difference between the two parties is smaller than the poll’s margin for error (3%) calculated for 95% confidence level.

"The support level enjoyed by PSD is roughly unchanged as compared to November 2018 (27.4%), while PNL gains 2.6 percentage points. The other parties do not see major developments," a press release of the polling agency said, according to local Agerpres.

Next in the voters’ preferences were Save Romania Union - USR (opposition party, 10%), the Alliance for Liberals and Democrats - ALDE (junior ruling coalition partner, 9.2%), and PLUS (the newly-formed party headed by former prime minister Dacian Ciolos, 7%).

The scores were calculated out of the voters who expressed an option, namely 54.5% of the total polled sample, of 1,080 people. Only 26% of the respondents said they will surely vote in the elections for the European Parliament. The poll was conducted between January 21 and February 5, 2019.
