Industrial turnover goes up 5.4% in Romania in first six months on better performing manufacturing sector

Romania's annual industrial turnover increased by 5.4 percent in the first half of this year, in nominal terms compared with the same period last year, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

This increase was mainly due to developments in manufacturing, which was up 5.7 percent. Meanwhile, the mining industry decreased by 2.9 percent.

By main industrial groups, increases in turnover were seen in the capital goods industry (+16.8 percent), consumer durables (+5.7 percent), intermediate goods (+4.5 percent) and durable goods industry (+1.6percent). The growth was offset by the energy industry, which has decreased by 13.5 percent.

In June 2013, the turnover in industry, including both domestic and foreign markets, in nominal terms, increased by 3.1 percent as compared to the previous month, and by 6.7 percent year-on-year.

The monthly advance was due to higher mining and quarrying activity (12.0 percent) and to manufacturing ( up 2.8 percent).

By main industrial groups, the turnover was up in the energy industry (23.6 percent), consumer durables (+2.9 percent) and capital goods (+2.7 percent). Drops were recorded for the durable goods (-3.9 percent), while intermediate goods stayed flat.

Compared to mid- 2012, the increases in June this year were triggered by the manufacturing sector (+7.2 percent), while the mining and quarrying industry went down by 5 percent.

By main industrial groups, the most significant increases were seen in the capital goods industry (+22.1 percent) and energy ( plus 11.8 percent). Turnover also went up in the intermediate goods sector (+1.7 percent) and in the durable consumer goods sector (+0.5 percent).
