Intelligence Service: Radicalization is growing in Romania

30 June 2017

The radicalization phenomenon is growing in the world and in Romania, said the Romanian Intelligence Service’s spokesperson Ovidiu Marincea.

It is necessary to update the law on combating and preventing terrorism, he added.

He made these statements after a 39-year old Romanian in Pitesti was detained yesterday for terrorist propaganda.

Those who can be easily radicalized are marginalized people living in disadvantaged areas, added Marincea. The radicalization can also happen in prisons.

“All over the world they have the same profile. They are excluded from society, frustrated, committing minor offenses,” the SRI spokesperson explained.

A 39-year-old man from Arges county in Romania was detained on Thursday morning for allegedly being involved in terrorism-related activities. The man, known as Ibrahim, is believed to have sent information about a military objective in Romania to a terrorist group from a European Union member state. The group was linked to those who claimed the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015.
